The San Diego Seals are proud to announce team captains for the 2019-20 season, led by veteran defenseman Brodie Merrill who returns for his second season with the ‘C’ on his chest. Forward Kyle Buchanan and defenseman Cam Holding will again serve as assistant captains for the upcoming campaign.
“I believe we have one of the strongest leadership groups in the game,” said general manager and head coach Patrick Merrill. “All of our captains embody what it takes to be a professional and a champion. We have a lot of younger players, and I couldn’t think of any better captains to show them the way and help us compete every night.”
Brodie Merrill, 38, was named the first captain in Seals history before the team’s inaugural season. Merrill helped lead the team to a 10-8 record, finishing second in the Western Division. The 15-year NLL veteran ranks second in NLL history with 2,435 loose balls. Merrill is a league-record three-time NLL Transition Player of the Year recipient (2009, 2010, 2017) and an eight-time NLL All-Pro selection. He was named an All-Pro again following last season.
“I’m honored to lead this team,” said Merrill of his captainship. “I hope to build on what we accomplished last year and continue to move towards our goal of winning a championship. I will do my best to lead by example and support my teammates.”
Buchanan, 32, was the first player acquired in Seals franchise history. He ranked third on the team in points (67) and recorded eight games with 5+ points in the team’s inaugural season. Buchanan tied a Seals single-game record with five goals on March 2 vs. Vancouver, and finished 2019 with three eight-point contests.
Holding, 30, appeared in all 18 games during the 2018-19 season. The defenseman led the team in loose balls (157), sixth-most in the NLL. Holding’s five goals were the most by a Seals defenseman.
The San Diego Seals host their 2019-20 home-opener on Saturday, December 14 at 7:00pm PST at Pechanga Arena San Diego. Single game tickets are now on sale at SealsLax.com.
