The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) announced today that San Diego Seals president, Steve Govett, has been named the general manager of the men’s field lacrosse senior and U19 teams. His responsibilities begin immediately, as the longtime sports executive will prepare and accompany the senior team to defend its title at the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships in Israel in July.
“Representing my native country, first as a player and more recently in a leadership capacity, has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Govett. “The memory of our gold-medal-winning performance four years ago is one I will forever cherish. Now we’ll look to repeat!”
With Govett on the staff, Team Canada’s senior men’s squad has won two of the last three world championships (2006 and 2014). He won bronze and silver medals as a player in 1994 and 1998, respectively.
“The late Dave Huntley had an immeasurable impact on the sport as a whole – he left big shoes to fill,” said Govett. “I’m humbled by this opportunity, and will look to further his efforts in the growth of the sport and continued success of the men’s teams on the international stage.”
Govett will serve on an independent board that oversees Canada’s national teams.
The British Columbia native is enshrined in his hometown Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame and the Radford Athletics Hall of Fame, where he graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer. He’s spent the past 25 seasons in the National Lacrosse League. In five seasons as a player, Govett won three championships. He’s been the League’s Executive of the Year, and was instrumental in the sale of franchises to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and J Tsai Sports. The 51-year-old is the president of the NLL’s San Diego Seals and vice president, new business for J Tsai Sports.
