(SAN DIEGO, CA – Feb. 22, 2020) – It was history in the making on Saturday afternoon, as Seals captain Brodie Merrill recorded his 2,518th loose ball to set a new NLL All-Time record in the team’s 15-10 win over Vancouver at Pechanga Arena.
“I couldn’t be happier for Brodie,” said general manager and head coach Patrick Merrill. “I’m his biggest fan. The key thing about that stat is that it’s a hard working stat. When you pick up loose balls, you control the game. With his ability, his grit and his determination for all these years, I’m really happy he was able to accomplish that, especially with a big win.”
After falling behind early, the Seals went on a ten-goal run to secure the lead and never looked back. Forward Casey Jackson tied a career-high with five goals, sparked by a second-quarter hat trick. Forwards Wesley Berg, Kyle Buchanan and Austin Staats each netted a pair of goals, while defenseman Oliver Bolsterli buried his first career goal.
“We had a slow start obviously, but I think the guys knew the importance of the game,” continued Merrill. “We were a little bit tight to begin the game and [Vancouver] came at us right off the bat. We’ve been working on our mindset and attitude before games and how we prepare, but the guys just knew the importance of the game.”
Rookie goaltender Nick Damude earned his third win in as many starts, behind a tough Seals defense that held Vancouver to just three second-half goals. With the win, the Seals officially clinch the season series over the Warriors before meeting one final time in March at Rogers Arena.
The Seals will head north next weekend to face the Calgary Roughnecks at the Scotiabank Saddledome before returning home on March 7 for Star Wars night. Reserve your seats today to celebrate our Wookiee of the Year at SealsLax.com.
