(SAN DIEGO – Dec. 29, 2019) – In the team’s first overtime game in franchise history, the San Diego Seals earned their first win of the 2019-20 season with an 11-10 victory over the Vancouver Warriors.
“That was the best 60-minute effort we’ve had so far,” said general manager and head coach Patrick Merrill. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been so happy to win a game in December. It was a great team win. Vancouver played really, really well, it could’ve gone either way and we’re happy to have come out on top.”
Captain Brodie Merrill netted the overtime winner on a breakaway just two minutes into the extra period to seal San Diego’s first win of the season.
“It was a great read by Brodie,” continued Merrill. “He’s scored a million goals like that, and at 38 it’s great to see him move up the floor like that. I think that shows how important this game was. [Vancouver] had a good chance, we got a good bounce and Brodie just finished it off.”
Forward Connor Fields led the Seals offense with four goals on the afternoon, including a first-half hat trick.
“He’s a really special talent,” continued Merrill. “He’s starting to get a feel for the game and add to the other great lefties we have on that side. It was his best game and I’m sure there’s going to be more exciting things to come from him.”
Goaltender Frank Scigliano stood tall in net, stopping 46 shots, while the Seals penalty kill unit held Vancouver to one power play goal.
The San Diego Seals return home on Sunday, January 12 to host the Saskatchewan Rush at 1:00 PM PST. Reserve your seats today at SealsLax.com.
